Node Project

A UX project that proposes a concept to address carbon emission reduction.

Overview
RMIT Design School required a project realised as a result of exploration lead via personal design passion. This is a project that comprehensively proposes a design concept to address the issue of carbon emissions through the utilisation of community, with appropriate justification for project funding.

The Challenge

Create a concept and associated mobile application to address the need for increased climate action in Australia.

“In 2023, CCPI ranks Australia as 55th in the world for climate action contribution. As a prominent societal issue this needs to be addressed by the general public. The most impactful way forward is through education and reduction of carbon in the atmosphere. We need innovative ideas to push change in thinking.”

Target Audience

Residents of suburban areas of all age groups who own a mobile device and seek a platform to earn rewards for simple tasks completed.

Research Methods

Climate change research
Existing mobile application research

Design Process

  1. Develop an inspiration journal to formulate student design passion,
  2. With outlined design passion (climate action), a random experimentation process was undertaken to spark a potential UX concept,
  3. In collaboration with design mentors, a return brief was provided to the studio leads.
  4. Sketching was created to outline the key concept of the UX prototype.
  5. Branding was created through Adobe software.
  6. The concept was refined and actualised through Figma processes (UI) and Adobe software (AR) to create a cohesive display/explanation.

The Solution

Node Project is a design concept that tackles climate change (particularly CO2 emissions), while also creating a fun and engaging activity for community members.

Gardening for the benefit of connection and climate.

Concept explained

  1. A community member (user) is first introduced to the NodeBox (view AR model via QR code) in their local community space (eg. a park),
  2. Via the NodeApp the user has the opportunity to participate in maintaining the NodeBox by caring for a personal plant. With users growing and maintaining the life of their plants, the reduction of CO2 in the local atmosphere will be recorded,
  3. Users are encouraged to continue their participation in the project through incentives offered by local participating businesses within the app,
  4. Through the project and the associated NodeApp, members of the local community will learn about climate issues, earn rewards, and compete with other users one-vs-one and also as a community (suburb-vs-suburb), and
  5. as points are earned following the daily watering process of the user’s plant, the Node Project will continually grow aspects of their local community.
